Building a Thriving Nonprofit

Built for organizations that build communities.

KindTru helps you see where your organization stands, through a confidential survey of your board and staff and the public record a funder reads. Then it helps you decide where you are going, with planning tools your own people run, and keep that plan moving through the year.

About a minute

KindTru, in the founder's words

The confidential survey, the report, the board meeting and the plan, and the check-ins and planning tools that keep it going through the year.

How it works

From what your people see to what your board decides

  1. 01UnderstandWhere you stand

Complete a short intake, send your board a ready-made heads-up, and invite your board and staff to a confidential survey. Your report reads the results back in plain language and proposes one priority for the next 90 days.

  2. 02ActWhere you are going

Your board decides at a one-hour meeting your own chair runs with the Facilitation Kit: adopt the priority, change it, or postpone it. The Action Plan records what was decided. When bigger questions need more room, the Planning Room and a half-day planning retreat built from your own results are there for them.

  3. 03ThriveKeeping it going

Check-ins at 30, 60 and 90 days keep each step moving, counted from the day your board agrees to start. Board Development gives your board fifteen minutes at each regular meeting, and when you are ready, a new assessment shows what has changed.

Look inside

Page one of a report, in its own words

The report opens with a brief: what your people told us, what it may mean, one proposed priority for the next 90 days, and the decision your board is asked to make.

  1. 01

    What your people told us

“Fundraising came out at the Emerging level, and answers to "Our organization has a written, up-to-date case for support that articulates our mission, approach, evidence of effectiveness, and what donor investment makes possible" were somewhat true.”
  2. 02

    A story across your results

“One reading is that respondents rate mission as a filter for what the organization takes on, while rating the fundraising practices around that filter lower. These answers cannot tell which grant decisions were made, nor what the actual spread of revenue is.”

“A small way to test it. When the treasurer brings revenue by source for the two completed years and the committed year ahead, ask which sources the board would decline on mission grounds.”

  3. 03

The proposed priority for the next 90 days

“Agree a funding direction for the next two years and start one action.”

“By day 90: The board has recorded a funding direction naming no more than two revenue priorities, and the first action has started with a first approach made.”

  4. 04

    The decision for your board

“Will the board adopt this funding commitment for the next 90 days, with the board chair leading it and the time the three steps require? Confirm it, change it, or name what is missing.”

Who it's for

For community organizations, and the funders who back them

Nonprofit leaders

Whether you're an executive director wearing a dozen hats, a board chair hoping for livelier conversations at the board table, or a program director asked for an organizational assessment, KindTru helps you see clearly where your organization stands, in what your board and staff tell you. Then it helps you decide where you are going, with a board meeting and a planning retreat your own people can run, and keep it going through the year.

Funders

Give the organizations you support the assessment and the planning tools that follow it, and learn from the pattern across the group, never from any one organization's answers. Each organization chooses, category by category, what to share.

How it works for funders

What this is, and what it isn't

KindTru gives your board and staff a confidential way to say what they actually see, and a set of tools for doing something about it. It isn't a consultant or a certification, and it won't flatter you.

The meeting guide and the planning tools are built for your own board chair or director to run, from a one-hour board meeting to a half-day retreat built from your own results. If your situation calls for something more bespoke, a consultant can pick up from the same results, and you can do both.

Built for organizations that build communities

Your organization does important work. Know where it stands, and decide together where it goes next.

One purchase covers both: an assessment that shows where your organization stands, and the Planning Room your team uses to decide where it is going, with Board Development to keep it going through the year.
